Our History

Our story begins in the summer of 1972, when Begoña and her sisters, summer visitors from Bilbao were strolling through El Collado.

At that moment, Lorenzo, pushing a wheelbarrow and covered in lime up to his eyelashes, kindly stepped aside to let them pass. The spark was instant. Begoña fell in love with the town, and the Mayor fell in love with Begoña.

They made a great team.

My father Lorenzo, in addition to being a builder, had his own quarry where he worked with stone. He also took care of his vineyards.

He had diverse hobbies, he was a photographer and a historian, with a deep interest in the history, prehistory, and traditions of Laguardia.

He was a member of the Basque Society of Friends of the Country, among other things.

In 1974, he completed the renovation of our family home, Legado de Ugarte, at Calle Mayor 17. The entire building was constructed with ashlar stone and wrought iron.

Over time, he built various buildings that today make up LegadodeUgarte.com.

My mother Begoña, an entrepreneur with initiative and vision, began her professional journey, balancing motherhood, family, and business. That same year, in 1974 she opened Restaurante Begoña, a restaurant with homemade food which also had six double bedrooms on the first floor.

Tirelessly hardworking and very charismatic, she ran her restaurant for 30 years, hosting and feeding workers and tourists.

In 2007, while I was working in education, I started my own personal project.

On 18th March 2008, after a complete renovation, I launched Legado de Ugarte, my first rural house, located on the first floor of my beautiful family home.

Two years later, after another significant renovation, another very special accommodation was opened, Legado de Zabala, my second rural house.

The passion for my work and the positive response from my guests encouraged me to progressively renovate two other properties: La Casa de Lorenzo and La Casa de Begoña.

The latest chapter in my story, just as my business is about to reach its eighteenth year, has been the restoration and renovation of the wine cellar

And so, I continue with my legacy, welcoming guests who enjoy both the charm of the accommodations in my dear town of Laguardia.
